Our Journey

From professional sailing to world-class boat building — nearly three decades of continuous improvement

1998 — 40 Grados Sur is Born

40 Grados Sur is born from the professional sailing campaign of Memo Castro, culminating in a successful Atlantic Ocean crossing. The company is founded in Buenos Aires, Argentina.

2003 — Open 30 Class

Following European market trends, 40 Grados Sur creates the Open 30 class in Argentina. Construction begins on the first two units, later exported to the Netherlands and Malta.

2006 — Milonga 35 Powerboats

Construction begins on the Milonga 35 powerboats, designed by internationally renowned naval architect Germán Frers. All units are exported to the United States.

2007 — Pilot Boats

40 Grados Sur builds pilot boats for the maritime pilots of the Río de la Plata access channel. All vessels are exported to Uruguay.

2008 — Factory Remodel & PDQ Transition

Years of continuous improvement lead to a complete factory remodel. Production processes are redesigned to eliminate downtime and maximize efficiency. The Canadian dollar crisis ends PDQ Yachts production in Whitby, Ontario.

2009 — Full Antares Production Begins

The PDQ 44 catamaran design, molds, and tooling are transferred to Buenos Aires. Full production of the Antares 44 begins at the 40 Grados Sur factory in San Fernando.

2009–2015 — Antares 44i

The Antares 44i establishes itself in the bluewater cruising market. Boats begin circumnavigating the globe.

2016–2020 — Antares 44 GS & GT

The Antares 44 GS and GT generations introduce lithium batteries, induction cooking, more solar capacity, and Yanmar engines.

2021–2024 — Hybrid & Vacuum Infusion

Hybrid propulsion options launch. Vacuum infusion technology adopted (2023). Sancho Castro takes over as President.

2025–Present — Antares 46

The Antares 46 is launched. 60+ vessels delivered worldwide to owners in 15+ countries.

Notable Achievements

The Antares 44 is not tested in a tank — it is tested by owners on real oceans, in real conditions, over real distances. What our owners have accomplished speaks to the quality of the boat:

  • 🌍 Multiple circumnavigations — Antares 44s have sailed around the world
  • 🌊 Numerous Atlantic crossings — Both east-to-west and west-to-east
  • 📏 40,000+ nautical miles — Individual owners logging serious ocean miles
  • 🌎 15+ countries — Boats delivered and cruising worldwide
  • 🏆 Liveaboard excellence — Recognized as one of the world's best liveaboard catamarans

From Sailing to Boat Building

The story of 40 Grados Sur begins in 1998, born from the professional sailing campaign of Memo Castro and a successful Atlantic Ocean crossing. What started as a passion for the sea became a boat building company in Buenos Aires, Argentina.

The early years were defined by ambition and versatility: creating the Open 30 class for Argentina, building the Milonga 35 powerboats designed by Germán Frers for the US market, and constructing pilot boats exported to Uruguay. Each project pushed the team's composite construction capabilities further.

In 2008, when PDQ Yachts production ended in Canada due to the currency crisis, the PDQ 44 catamaran design, molds, and tooling were transferred to Buenos Aires. Full production of the Antares 44 began at the 40 Grados Sur factory in San Fernando in 2009. The proven design was now built in Argentina with a team that had already spent a decade mastering FRP construction.

Over the following years, the team refined the boat through four generations: the 44i, GS, GT, and Hybrid. Each iteration incorporated improvements based on direct feedback from owners who were sailing these boats across oceans. The factory grew, the team gained experience, and the construction methods evolved — culminating in the adoption of vacuum infusion in 2023.

Today, with 60+ vessels completed and a team where core craftsmen have 14+ years of experience building this specific boat, 40 Grados Sur represents one of the most experienced catamaran production facilities in the world. The Antares 46, launching in 2025, is the next chapter — a new design built on a foundation that took nearly three decades to establish.
